Neurofeedback

What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a gentle, painless, non-invasive, medication-free treatment that helps train your brain to create new connections and pathways leading to improved brain function. Using sensors placed on the scalp, we monitor your brain-wave activity in real time and then provide you with meaningful feedback (via visual or audio cues) when your brain engages in more optimal patterns. Over successive sessions, your brain learns to self-regulate, shifting away from dysregulated states and toward healthier functioning.

Because the brain is plastic (capable of changing its connections and behavior), neurofeedback aims not just to mask symptoms but to promote lasting changes in how your brain operates.

What can it help with?

Research has demonstrated that neurofeedback is effective in supporting individuals facing a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Attention, focus, and impulse control concerns (for example, in ADHD) and ASD

  • Anxiety, mood dysregulation, stress, and difficulty calming the mind

  • Sleep problems, migraines/headaches, and other nervous system dysregulation issues

  • Substance use disorders, especially Alcohol Use Disorder

  • Post-traumatic stress / brain injury (TBI) / addiction-related coping difficulties

  • Performance enhancement (for students, professionals, athletes) who want to optimize brain regulation rather than treat a specific diagnosis.

How long does it take to complete Neurofeedback therapy?

Neurofeedback training is completed two to three times per week. Each session is scheduled for an hour, but may not take the full hour depending on the specific treatment protocols used. Most clients will notice some changes within the first 8-10 sessions. However, most clients require at least 20-40 sessions to consolidate long-term benefits. More complicated cases may require more sessions.

What is the process for Neurofeedback?

We begin with an initial map of your brain called a QEEG and develop an individualized treatment plan and protocols based on the results, your goals, and your history. These protocols encourage or discourage specific brain wave patterns. Following a consultation to discuss the findings of the brain map, we initiate neurofeedback training sessions. We check in with every client at the beginning of each session and complete a more in-depth symptom check every 10 sessions.

What is a typical neurofeedback session like?

Each session is unique for everyone. However, generally, the client will sit in front of a TV screen. Small sensors will be attached to the scalp, and the client will have the option to watch a movie or their preferred show, play a neurofeedback game, or receive audio feedback through music or sounds. The client’s brainwaves are transmitted through the sensors to a computer program, where they are read in real-time. When the brain produces specific brainwaves that are desired, it is rewarded through a larger and brighter TV screen, a higher score on the neurofeedback game, or pleasant sounds. Over time, the brain learns to remember the desired brainwave patterns and begins producing them on its own, leading to enhanced brain function and overall well-being.

Is neurofeedback safe?

Yes, neurofeedback is generally regarded as safe with minimal side effects. Some side effects may include feeling tired after the session, headaches, sleep disturbances, and changes in energy levels. However, your neurofeedback therapist will monitor your symptoms and any side effects, adjusting protocols as needed. Neurofeedback is non-invasive and painless.
